What Does Knoxville Do With Its Sundays? Try Old City Haircutters

Can you actually spend a whole afternoon in a record store without buying anything and still leave satisfied? At Rewind Vintage & Records on North Central Street, the honest answer is yes — though you’ll probably buy something anyway.

Rewind sits in the strip of storefronts that runs along North Central between the Old City proper and the edge of the Fourth and Gill neighborhood. It’s the kind of block that hasn’t been aggressively renovated yet, which in Knoxville means it’s doing fine. The store occupies a narrow, high-ceilinged space with records stacked floor-to-rafter in milk crates and wooden bins, and a rack of vintage clothing along the left wall that rewards patience more than speed. Nobody’s going to hand you a curated selection. You dig.

The vinyl inventory skews toward classic rock, soul, and country, which tracks for East Tennessee, but the surprises show up when you flip past the obvious stuff. Decent jazz section. More reggae than you’d expect. Occasional weird regional pressings that have no business being priced as reasonably as they are. The staff have opinions but won’t volunteer them unless you ask, which is the correct policy for a record store. If you want to talk about the relative merits of two different Allman Brothers pressings, they’ll talk. If you want to browse in peace, they’ll let you.

The vintage clothing side is edited enough to be browsable without being so curated that everything costs a hundred and twenty dollars. Western shirts, band tees of uncertain provenance, denim in various states of wear. Weekend browsers tend to cluster here; weekday visits get you more room to move and more floor to cover.

Prices on records run roughly what you’d expect from a shop that knows what it has: common albums in fair condition go for three to eight dollars, anything clean or rare climbs from there. The occasional sixty-dollar record appears, but most of the bins stay affordable. They also buy collections, which means the stock rotates in unpredictable ways — a reason to come back.

There’s no coffee, no listening station, no events calendar pushed hard on Instagram. Rewind doesn’t perform being a record store; it just is one. That distinction sounds minor until you’ve spent time in shops that are mostly aesthetic and light on actual music. Here the ratio is reversed: a lot of records, modest ambiance, agreeable noise from whatever’s on the turntable at the counter.

The neighborhood itself is worth the trip. North Central has a diner, a bar or two, and enough foot traffic on weekends to feel alive without feeling like downtown. Parking is easy, which in Knoxville is never a trivial consideration.

Go on a Saturday afternoon when the light comes in flat through the front windows and someone’s put on something you half-recognize. Give it an hour. You’ll either find exactly what you were looking for or something better that you weren’t, which is the whole point of the exercise.
