Russia labels independent Mediazona outlet as foreign agent for second time

On Friday, Russia’s Justice Ministry announced that the independent online news outlet Mediazona has been designated a “foreign agent” for the second time. The ministry said Mediazona was disseminating false information about the country’s law‑enforcement system, a charge that brings the outlet under heightened government scrutiny.

Background on the designation

The “foreign agent” label is a Soviet‑era term revived by the Russian government to identify organizations it claims receive foreign funding and engage in political activity. Those designated face extensive reporting requirements, financial audits and restrictions on their operations.

Mediazona first received the foreign‑agent label in 2021. At that time, the Justice Ministry also removed the outlet from the register of authorized media organizations, limiting its ability to operate legally within Russia.

Impact on Mediazona and its staff

Following the latest designation, Mediazona posted a notice on its Telegram channel confirming the decision and noting that it marks the second such action by Russian authorities. Several of the outlet’s journalists, including editor‑in‑chief Sergei Smirnov, have already been labeled foreign agents and now work from outside Russia.

Yegor Skovoroda, the outlet’s editor, who also resides abroad, described the ministry’s statement as “incredibly crazy.” He emphasized that the designation does not silence the outlet’s reporting, which continues to focus on legal and human‑rights issues in Russia.

Previous government actions against Mediazona

In March 2022, shortly after Moscow’s full‑scale invasion of Ukraine, the state communications regulator Roskomnadzor blocked Mediazona’s website within Russia. The move was part of a broader crackdown on independent media that reported on the war and related domestic policies.

Russian authorities have also opened criminal cases against several Mediazona journalists who remain abroad, signaling a continued effort to pressure independent reporting.

International response and implications

Human‑rights groups and press‑freedom organizations have condemned the foreign‑agent designation as an attempt to stifle dissent and limit the flow of information. They argue that such measures undermine the constitutional principle of free speech and the public’s right to know.

The designation adds to a growing list of Russian outlets and NGOs labeled as foreign agents, a trend that has drawn criticism from Western governments and international watchdogs.

What this means for Russian media

For independent journalists operating inside Russia, the foreign‑agent label creates significant legal and financial hurdles, often forcing them to relocate abroad to continue their work. The continued use of the label suggests that the Russian government will maintain a restrictive environment for media that challenges official narratives.

Mediazona’s experience reflects a broader pattern of state pressure on independent news sources, raising concerns about the future of press freedom in Russia.
