Former foster youth receives furnished home in Florida through volunteer effort

Victorious Hawthorne-Charles, who recently aged out of the Place of Hope foster care system, celebrated move‑in day this past Friday when she received the keys to a brand‑new home in Florida. The occasion was more than a simple hand‑over of a property; it represented a tangible step toward stability for her and her young son after years of uncertainty.

Volunteer‑driven furnishing effort

When Hawthorne‑Charles first entered the empty house, she described the space as a blank canvas: “Originally there was nothing, so we’re literally furnishing everything—from the living room, the dining room, kitchen, my room, my kid’s room.” Dozens of volunteers from Place of Hope arrived that day with sofas, beds, kitchenware, decorations and other household essentials. Their coordinated effort transformed the vacant structure into a lived‑in home within hours.

Lisa McDulin, a representative for Place of Hope, explained that this is the seventh young adult to receive a home through the organization’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity. “It’s such a blessing to be able to bless her,” McDulin said, highlighting the reciprocal nature of the work—both the recipient and the volunteers experience spiritual and emotional uplift.

Faith and community at the heart of the project

Hawthorne‑Charles emphasized the role of faith and community in her journey. “God is real, and community is so important,” she said, noting the love and dedication shown by the volunteers. The volunteers echoed that sentiment, describing the experience as a chance to “wrap our arms around” the children and youth they serve.

The collaboration between Place of Hope and Habitat for Humanity underscores a broader commitment among local nonprofits to address the housing needs of former foster youth. By providing not only a roof but also the furnishings that make a house feel like a home, the partnership aims to give these young adults a firm foundation as they transition to independent adulthood.

Looking ahead

With the home now fully furnished, Hawthorne‑Charles and her son can focus on building a stable future—pursuing education, employment, and community involvement without the looming worry of housing insecurity. The volunteers’ contribution serves as a reminder that when a community rallies around its most vulnerable members, lasting change is possible.

For those interested in supporting similar initiatives, Place of Hope and Habitat for Humanity continue to welcome volunteers and donors throughout Florida. Their combined efforts demonstrate how faith‑guided service and practical assistance can work hand‑in‑hand to transform lives.
