Rush Springs, Oklahoma, is preparing for its annual Watermelon Festival, a tradition since 1940 that celebrates the town’s farming heritage and community spirit.
Local Farmers Share Their Pride
Garrin Bratcher of Bratcher Melons has been a watermelon farmer for most of his life. He started when he was 10 years old and now continues the tradition with his own children.
The Oklahoma heat plays a crucial role in producing the town’s renowned watermelons. Bratcher said, ‘We have amazing soil to start with, which is why we can grow good ones. The Oklahoma heat, my grandpa used to always say, heat will bring the sweet.’
Festival Features and Events
The festival features free Rush Springs watermelon, over 100 arts and crafts vendors, and live entertainment throughout the day. Bailie Heston, the 2026 Rush Springs Watermelon Queen, serves as the event’s ambassador and shared her excitement about achieving a childhood dream.
Despite challenges like a summer hailstorm that destroyed some of the Bratcher family’s crops, the farmers remain committed to their craft. The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival will take place on Aug. 8, offering a day of celebration and community pride.
