Rubber, Rails, and Real History: Why the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad Should Be on Your Akron Bucket List

There are few pleasures in this world quite like watching the Ohio countryside roll past a train window while a warm cup of coffee warms your hands. The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad — which picks up passengers right at the Akron Northside Station on the city’s north end — delivers exactly that, and then some. This isn’t a theme-park gimmick or a tourist trap dressed up in nostalgia. It’s a genuine, working heritage railroad that threads through one of the most beautiful national parks in the Midwest, and it happens to start practically in Akron’s backyard.

The railroad runs through Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Ohio’s only national park, tracing a corridor of dense hardwood forest, sandstone ledges, and lazy river bends that most people never get to see because there’s simply no road that takes you there. The tracks follow the old Akron Branch of the Valley Railway, a line that once carried coal and passengers through the valley in the industrial age. Today, the only cargo is wonder.

Boarding at Akron Northside Station is a pleasure in itself. The station has that unhurried, small-city charm — brick platform, a helpful crew in conductor blues, and the satisfying thump of vintage passenger cars settling on the rails. From there, the train winds north through the valley, with stops at Peninsula, Brecksville, and other small communities along the route. You can ride one way and hike or bike back along the Towpath Trail, which runs parallel to the tracks for much of the journey — a combination that makes for one of the most satisfying active days you can have in Northeast Ohio.

The scenery peaks in autumn, when the maples and oaks ignite in amber and crimson and every curve of the track reveals a postcard. But honestly, there is no bad season here. Spring brings trilliums and rushing waterfalls at Brandywine Falls just a short walk from one of the stops. Winter runs offer a quiet, almost meditative beauty, the valley going silver and still. Summer departures fill quickly, especially for the popular Bike Aboard program, which lets cyclists load their bikes onto a dedicated car and explore the Towpath at their own pace before catching a return train.

Special excursions throughout the year — beer and wine trains, dinner runs, holiday events — give the railroad an ever-changing personality. But even the standard day ride, roundtrip from Akron Northside, runs about three hours and feels like a genuine escape. Prices are reasonable, the cars are comfortable, and the staff clearly loves what they do.

If you’ve been sleeping on the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, consider this your wake-up call. Akron sits right at the southern gateway to one of the country’s great natural corridors, and this train is the finest way to experience it. Book a seat, pack a light bag, and let the valley do the rest.
