Research Triangle Park (RTP) is set to undergo significant changes with the adoption of RTP 3.0, a long-term initiative that expands land use in the park over the next 50 years.
RTP 3.0 and Its Implications
RTP leaders announced that companies and landowners unanimously approved the new development standards in June, allowing for mixed-use and residential opportunities for the first time in the park’s history.
This development is particularly significant for Apple, which announced plans to come to RTP in 2021. The company plans to build a 1-million sq.-ft building, creating over 3,000 additional jobs in machine learning, artificial intelligence, software engineering, and other cutting industries.
Apple’s investment in the state includes a $1 billion investment and a $100 million investment to support schools and community initiatives in the Triangle, plus $110 million toward infrastructure in 80 North Carolina counties.
According to Scott Levitan, Apple was ‘very engaged’ in the process of approving RTP 3.0, and the company remains ‘very much engaged on planning for the future of RTP.’ However, the exact details of Apple’s plans are not publicly known, and Research Triangle Foundation Vice President of Planning and Policy Travis Clayton stated that they know as much as the public does about Apple’s plans.
