RTD launches NextRide app to streamline Denver transit planning and ticketing

Denver commuters have a new tool to simplify their daily rides. The Regional Transportation District (RTD) announced the release of NextRide, a comprehensive mobile application that brings together trip planning, service alerts, ticket purchases and safety features in a single, easy‑to‑use interface.

From MyRide to NextRide

The previous MyRide app, introduced in 2022, functioned mainly as a digital wallet for RTD passes. While it offered buttons for trip planning and contacting RTD police, those actions opened an external web browser instead of staying within the app. Riders often found the experience clunky and inefficient.

NextRide replaces MyRide and is now available for download on Google Play and the Apple App Store. According to RTD General Manager and CEO Debra Johnson, the redesign was driven directly by “direct customer feedback” that highlighted the need for a more integrated, user‑friendly platform.

Key features for riders and families

NextRide lets users set frequent locations such as home or work, and mark favorite bus and train lines for quick access. An in‑app map displays every bus and train station throughout the Denver metro area, making it easier for families to plan routes without leaving the application.

The new security tab streamlines communication with RTD police, offering one‑tap calls or texts and a log of previously submitted reports. This feature supports parents who want to stay informed about safety concerns on their regular routes.

What’s still coming

While the core services are live, two flexible‑route programs—FlexRide and Access‑a‑Ride—are slated for integration within the next two years. RTD also indicated that its legacy MyRide and Transit Watch apps will remain on the stores for the foreseeable future, with users receiving notice before any eventual phase‑out.

Community impact

By consolidating essential transit tools into one app, RTD aims to improve the daily experience for commuters, students, and seniors who rely on public transportation. The move aligns with broader efforts to modernize Denver’s infrastructure while respecting the needs of families and individual riders.

Local businesses and employers stand to benefit as well, since a more reliable transit planning tool can reduce commute stress and support punctuality for the workforce. The app’s straightforward design also respects the time‑pressed schedules of parents juggling work and school drop‑offs.

Looking ahead

RTD plans to gather ongoing user feedback to refine NextRide’s functionality. As the app evolves, the district hopes to set a benchmark for transit agencies nationwide, demonstrating how technology can enhance public services without compromising simplicity or safety.
