Royce White Appears at Indiana Fever Game in Blonde Wig to Promote WNBA Draft Bid

Indianapolis – On Friday night, former first‑round NBA draft pick Royce White stepped into Gainbridge Fieldhouse for the Indiana Fever’s matchup against the Connecticut Sun. He arrived wearing a long blonde wig, a look he had previewed on social media earlier in the week.

White’s purpose at the game

When asked by OutKick why he was present, White said, “All hail Queen Roysha, the queen has arrived… I’m here because Black trans lesbians matter, and we’ve always mattered.” He added that he was there to “spectate” and to “support the WNBA and support the Fever,” while also scouting potential competition for his upcoming draft campaign.

Draft declaration and legal backing

White formally declared his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft in a letter sent to the league office by his attorney, former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz. The letter states that White identifies as a transgender woman and claims eligibility under the league’s new collective bargaining agreement, which requires players to be women but does not define the term by biological sex.

White’s filing appears designed to pressure the WNBA to clarify whether biological males can compete in the league. He has indicated he may pursue a discrimination lawsuit if the league bars his participation.

League response and broader context

Multiple outlets have reported that both White and former NBA player Enes Kanter Freedom are unlikely to be eligible for the draft. A league source described their declarations as “publicity stunts.” The WNBA has not yet issued a formal determination on White’s eligibility.

White’s appearance follows a recent controversy involving Freedom, who was ejected from a Chicago Sky game and subsequently banned from future Sky events. That incident has drawn national attention and sparked debate over gender identity policies in professional sports.

Public reaction at the arena

Fans greeted White with handshakes and photos, and he appeared unfazed by any potential backlash. “Who cares? It’s life, you get one life to live… hopefully you give all glory to God,” he said when asked about the reception he expected.

White’s basketball background

Royce White was selected 16th overall by the Houston Rockets in the 2012 NBA Draft after a standout career at Iowa State. He played three NBA games with the Sacramento Kings in 2014 before stepping away from the league.

His current campaign adds another chapter to the ongoing national conversation about transgender participation in women’s sports, a topic that continues to engage fans, policymakers, and advocacy groups across the country.
