Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue expands to 21 firefighters, adds new stations

Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue is rapidly scaling its workforce and facilities to meet the county’s booming growth. The department, which began full‑time operations in 2022 after a pandemic‑related delay, has increased its staff from five career firefighters to 21, a four‑fold expansion in just four years.

Staffing surge and expanded capabilities

Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder recalled the early days when the department operated on a three‑on, two‑off schedule, with firefighters pulling 100‑ to 120‑hour weeks. “We had guys working 100 to 120‑hour work weeks,” he said. Today, the department fields a full complement of trained professionals, including paramedics, advanced EMTs and specialists in hazardous‑materials response, swift‑water rescue, high‑angle rescue and structural firefighting.

New stations to serve a growing community

The department now runs two stations in Seguin—at 2700 N. Guadalupe St. and 6551 SH‑123. A temporary station is slated to open in Marion within two weeks at 529 FM 466, and construction is under way on a permanent facility near FM 78 and Huber Road in New Braunfels, expected to be operational by early 2027. These additions will provide more space for living quarters, which are currently cramped, sharing kitchen and entertainment areas with the radio command center.

Planning for 15,000 future homes

County officials have identified roughly 15,000 homes planned for development in unincorporated areas of Guadalupe County. “We’ve got right now 15,000 houses plotted to grow in this community all in the unincorporated area of the county,” Pinder explained. Because these homes lie outside city limits, the county fire department must deliver fire protection and emergency response services directly.

Community impact and future outlook

Fire Division Chief Aaron Ward emphasized that the professional department can provide services beyond the capacity of many volunteer fire districts, offering advanced life‑support and specialized rescue capabilities. Despite the challenges of limited living space, Ward praised his crews for their dedication. “Taking care of people on their worst day, and they come back here, and they don’t complain … that’s amazing,” he said.

With staffing levels now robust and new stations on the horizon, Guadalupe County Fire and Rescue is positioned to protect a rapidly expanding population while maintaining the high standards of service that residents expect.
