Rosevelt Park Pool Is Worth the Drive Across Town

By ten o’clock on a July morning, the parking lot off West 12th Street is already half-gone. That’s your first signal. Roosevelt Park doesn’t advertise itself particularly well — it doesn’t need to — but the west-side families who grew up coming here have apparently been spreading the word quietly for decades, and now the lot fills early.

The park itself sits on a generous chunk of land just west of Minnesota Avenue, anchored by an outdoor pool that opened in 1922 and has been upgraded enough times since that it no longer looks like a municipal liability waiting to happen. The pool runs long — a genuine lap-friendly stretch — with a separate shallow section for small kids and a waterslide that earns its keep on a hot afternoon. Admission is around $4 for adults, less for kids, which is so cheap it briefly makes you suspicious. It is not suspicious. It is just a city pool that is priced like a city pool.

The surrounding park is less manicured than McKennan, more functional than fancy. There’s a lot of shade from mature trees, which matters more than any amenity once August settles in. Picnic shelters, a playground with actual decent equipment, tennis and basketball courts — the usual park inventory, executed without fuss. The kind of place where someone’s grandmother has been claiming the same picnic table every Saturday since the Carter administration.

What sets Roosevelt apart from the other Sioux Falls parks in a similar category isn’t any single feature. It’s the feeling that nobody is trying too hard. The pool staff runs a tight ship without being humorless about it. The concession stand sells the foods you expect from a concession stand and doesn’t pretend otherwise — candy bars, chips, the kind of nachos that are just chips with orange substance. No complaints. You’re here to swim, not eat a meal.

If you go on a weekday, you’ll catch lap swim in the mornings before the recreational swim hours open, which is a decent option if you want to actually move through the water rather than navigate around a flotilla of pool noodles. By early afternoon on a weekend, the pool is lively in the way that outdoor public pools are supposed to be lively — kids launching themselves off the side, adults in a resigned float, teenagers engaged in whatever social rituals teenagers perform near water.

The park also hosts a small farmers market on some summer mornings, though the schedule varies and the city website is not always your most reliable guide to current events. Worth checking if you’re planning a Saturday visit — sometimes it’s there, sometimes it isn’t, and either way the park gives you enough to do.

Parking on the street along 12th is an option when the lot fills, and the whole area is flat and walkable if you’re coming from the neighborhoods to the north. Roosevelt is about as uncomplicated as a public park gets, which is not a criticism. At some point, uncomplicated is exactly the point.
