Democratic candidate Lynne Walz concedes Nebraska governor race to Gov. Jim Pillen

LINCOLN, Neb. — Democratic candidate Lynne Walz formally conceded the 2026 Nebraska governor’s race to incumbent Republican Governor Jim Pillen early this morning. In a statement released to the press, Walz said she spoke directly with Governor Pillen to congratulate him on what she described as a “hard‑fought campaign.”

Walz’s remarks focus on unity and continued civic engagement

“Earlier this morning, I spoke with Governor Pillen to congratulate him on a hard‑fought campaign and wish him well as he continues to serve Nebraska,” Walz said. “This isn’t the result we hoped for, but this campaign was always about bringing Nebraskans together, and that work doesn’t end today. Nebraskans will be watching to make sure our leaders in Lincoln deliver, and I’ll be right there with them.”

Walz emphasized that the election outcome does not signal the end of public service or community involvement. She urged Nebraskans to stay engaged with state leaders and to hold elected officials accountable for delivering on promises made during the campaign.

Gratitude expressed to family, running mate and volunteers

In her concession statement, Walz thanked her family, her running mate Ben and his wife Paula Sue, and the volunteers who helped staff the campaign trail. “Ben and I are proud of the campaign we ran and even prouder of the people who stood with us,” she wrote. “The best days for Nebraska are still ahead of us. Thank you, Nebraska, for opening your doors to me this year. My family and I are truly grateful.”

The Walz campaign highlighted several key issues during the race, including agricultural policy, rural broadband expansion, and support for small‑business growth. While the final vote count favored Governor Pillen, Walz’s team noted that voter turnout in several rural counties exceeded expectations, indicating continued enthusiasm for Democratic ideas in the state.

Election results and next steps

State election officials are still tabulating final precinct totals, but early returns show Governor Pillen leading by a comfortable margin. The official certification of results is expected within the next week.

Governor Pillen has not yet issued a formal response to Walz’s concession, but his campaign spokesperson indicated that the governor will address the state in an upcoming press conference, focusing on the administration’s priorities for the next two years.

Walz’s concession marks the conclusion of a competitive race that drew significant attention from both local and national observers. The campaign’s emphasis on bringing Nebraskans together and fostering civic participation aligns with the state’s tradition of community‑focused politics.

As the election cycle moves forward, both parties will begin planning for the next round of state and local races, with particular focus on legislative seats that could shift the balance of power in the Nebraska Legislature.
