Romania uses F‑16 jets to destroy marine drone near Neptun Deep gas platform

Romania took decisive action on Thursday to protect its emerging Black Sea energy hub. Defence Minister Radu Miruta announced that two F‑16 fighter jets were dispatched to destroy a marine drone that had been detected a few hundred metres from the Neptun Deep offshore gas platform.

Why the response mattered

The Neptun Deep project, a joint venture between OMV Petrom and the state gas producer Romgaz, is slated to become the European Union’s largest gas producer when it begins operations in 2027. With hundreds of workers stationed on the platform, any threat to its safety could have far‑reaching economic and energy‑security implications for Romania and its NATO allies.

Miruta explained that the decision to engage the drone was driven by the need to safeguard lives and preserve critical infrastructure. He posted the rationale on Facebook, emphasizing that the drone’s proximity posed an unacceptable risk to the platform’s personnel.

Unclear origins, but not Ukrainian

While the Romanian government has not identified the drone’s source, it noted that Ukraine confirmed the device did not belong to its forces. President Nicușor Dan, also a former mayor of Bucharest, blamed the Russian Federation for the incident, describing it as an “irresponsible” escalation that threatens regional stability.

Romania shares a 614‑kilometre land border with Ukraine and has experienced repeated incursions by Russian drones over the past four years. The Black Sea, a vital corridor for trade and energy shipments, has also seen a surge in floating mines linked to the conflict.

Broader regional efforts

NATO members Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey have collectively neutralised more than 150 mines drifting across Black Sea trade lanes. In July, the three states expanded a joint task force to not only clear mines but also protect critical infrastructure such as offshore energy installations.

Earlier this month, Romanian army divers successfully destroyed two Gerbera‑type drones operating within the country’s exclusive economic zone near Neptun Deep, underscoring a pattern of heightened vigilance.

Implications for energy security

The Neptun Deep project represents a strategic pivot for Romania, reducing its reliance on imported gas and strengthening the EU’s overall energy independence. Any disruption—whether from hostile drones, mines, or other maritime threats—could delay the project’s timeline and affect regional supply dynamics.

Romanian officials stress that continued cooperation with NATO allies remains essential to deter further aggression and ensure the safe development of the Black Sea’s offshore resources.

Looking ahead

As the Neptun Deep platform moves toward its 2027 on‑stream date, Romania is expected to maintain heightened surveillance and rapid‑response capabilities in the Black Sea. The incident serves as a reminder that safeguarding critical energy infrastructure is a shared responsibility among NATO partners, especially in a region still affected by the fallout of Russia’s war in Ukraine.
