As summer arrives in North Texas, high temperatures and drought are becoming increasingly common. However, this can be an opportunity to make a positive change in your landscape. Incorporating native plants is a low-effort, high-return solution to conserve water and reap bonus benefits.
What are Native Plants?
Native plants are local, naturally occurring plants that have thrived in a given area for centuries. They are beneficial because they can withstand weather extremes, require less supplemental water once established, and are more resistant to insects and diseases than non-adapted plants.
Native plants are inherently resilient and can develop deep root systems, needing less supplemental water than non-native plants and turf grasses. They can withstand periods of drought due to their extensive root systems, ability to store water, and seasonal dormancy. Reimagining a portion of your landscape from turf grass to native plants can make a real difference, with studies showing that native landscapes can use up to 50% less water than traditional lawns.
Getting Started
Getting started is easy, and you don’t have to overhaul your entire yard at once. The Rockwall County Master Gardeners recommend the following steps:
- Assess your space, considering sun exposure, soil type, and drainage.
- Start small by transitioning one section of your lawn to a native bed.
- Choose the right plants by selecting native plant groupings that will thrive in Rockwall County.
- Plant in the fall, when temperatures are slightly cooler and soils are still warm, allowing your new plants to establish deep root systems.
- Water to establish and mulch to protect plants and reduce water needs.
Beyond saving money and conserving water, the bonus benefits of adding natives to your landscape include increased pollinator activity, beautiful and interesting textures and blooms, less maintenance overall, increased curb appeal, and potentially higher property value.
