Roblox unveils tools for creators to launch standalone games on all platforms

Roblox, the popular online gaming platform, used its recent developers conference to reveal a suite of new tools aimed at expanding how creators distribute their games. The company said creators will soon be able to publish their titles as standalone applications that run on mobile devices, personal computers and major gaming consoles, allowing players to access games without first opening the Roblox app.

Standalone apps and browser play

Roblox will provide the underlying technology and services needed for these independent apps, handling everything from hosting to cross‑platform compatibility. By the end of 2026, players will also be able to join games directly from a game’s Experience Details page in the Chrome browser, eliminating the need for a separate download. Roblox indicated that additional browsers will be supported in the months that follow.

Online and offline gameplay combined

Another feature highlighted at the conference is the ability for creators to blend online and offline modes within a single title. This means developers can design single‑player campaigns that run without an internet connection, then add networked multiplayer components for later stages, giving players a seamless experience regardless of connectivity.

AI‑driven creation tools

Roblox is also expanding its artificial‑intelligence tools for game development. The company’s Build feature, launched in July, lets users generate a playable game from a simple text prompt inside the Roblox app. According to Roblox, roughly 9,000 games have been published using Build, and 71 % of those creators had not previously used Roblox Studio, the platform’s traditional development environment.

Later this year, Roblox plans to roll out Scene Generator, which will let creators produce functional game layouts by providing a text prompt and a reference image. In addition, new non‑player character (NPC) capabilities will enable developers to create AI‑controlled characters that can automatically playtest games, helping creators identify bugs and balance issues before release.

Implications for creators and players

These announcements signal Roblox’s push to make game creation more accessible and to broaden the ways players can discover and enjoy content. By offering standalone apps and browser‑based access, the platform reduces friction for users who may prefer a traditional app experience or who lack the bandwidth to download large files. The AI tools lower the technical barrier for new developers, potentially increasing the diversity of games available on the platform.

Industry observers note that Roblox’s move mirrors trends in the broader gaming industry, where publishers are seeking to reach audiences across multiple devices and to streamline development pipelines with AI assistance. While the long‑term impact on the market remains to be seen, the company’s roadmap suggests a commitment to innovation that could benefit both seasoned developers and hobbyists alike.

Looking ahead

Roblox has not disclosed specific timelines for the rollout of the standalone app infrastructure beyond the end‑of‑year target for browser play. The company said it will continue to refine its AI tools based on creator feedback and will provide additional documentation to help developers integrate the new features into existing projects.

As the platform evolves, creators and players alike can expect more flexibility in how games are built, distributed and experienced, reinforcing Roblox’s position as a major hub for user‑generated content in the gaming ecosystem.
