RJD2 and Supastition debut collaborative album at 2×2 Hip‑Hop Festival in North Carolina

North Carolina’s hip‑hop community gathered on Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Land‑Grant Brewing Company for the revived 2×2 Hip‑Hop Festival. The headline act featured veteran producer RJD2 and local rapper Supastition, who used the stage to showcase their freshly released collaborative album, According To….

From campus nights to a full‑length record

Supastition first met RJD2 in the early 2000s at a legendary campus‑night event held at the now‑defunct Bernie’s Bagels & Deli. Nearly two decades later, the two reunited when Supastition contributed vocals to the 2022 track “Life of the Party” on RJD2’s Escape from Sweet Auburn album. Inspired by that collaboration, Supastition asked RJD2 for a beat, and the producer responded with a “gang of tracks” that sparked a creative partnership.

In February, the pair released According To…, an eclectic record that blends playful boasts with deeply personal reflections. Songs such as “Back Talk” feature a stuttered RJD2 beat that “hits like a rabbit punch to the ribs,” while the album‑closing “A Beautiful Ending” mourns the 2022 death of Supastition’s childhood friend and producer Eric Hood.

Family, loss and faith on the record

Personal tragedy continues to shape the album’s narrative. After learning that his long‑absent biological father was dying, Supastition reached out only to have his father pass away weeks later. The loss inspired the track “The Mourning After,” in which Supastition raps, “I felt nothing,” describing the emotional distance created by his father’s earlier decisions.

Supastition also reflects on his role as a husband and father of two. On “One Last Time,” he proudly declares, “My kids call me Father of the Year,” emphasizing his commitment to family over touring. He explained that after his final tour in 2015, he consciously chose to stay home for birthdays and everyday moments, noting that “we’re all battling hypertension, high cholesterol, and trying to balance lives and families.”

Creative process and mutual growth

RJD2 praised Supastition’s lyrical honesty, saying he treats the demos “very tenderly, delicately,” focusing on arrangement rather than heavy‑handed production. The two artists exchanged tracks over several months, each pushing the other beyond comfort zones. RJD2 challenged Supastition to stretch his boom‑bap roots on harder‑hitting cuts like “Beasts Per Minute,” a dense, up‑tempo banger that showcases the rapper’s agility on a rapid beat.

Both artists noted that the collaboration allowed them to explore new creative frontiers while staying grounded in the everyday realities of family life and personal loss. The partnership illustrates how seasoned musicians can mentor emerging talent, reinforcing the value of inter‑generational support within the Christian‑inspired, family‑centered values of the local community.

Festival highlights and future plans

The 2×2 Hip‑Hop Festival also featured performances by Illogic/pRODUCT and Vada Azeem/JaySwifa, drawing a diverse crowd of hip‑hop enthusiasts. Organizers hope the event will become an annual showcase for regional talent, providing a platform for artists who prioritize authentic storytelling, faith, and family.

Supastition and RJD2 plan to continue working together, with additional tracks already in the pipeline. Their collaboration serves as a reminder that music can be a conduit for healing, faith, and the celebration of traditional family values.
