Riverfest 50th Anniversary Fireworks: Traffic and Bridge Closures Guide for Cincinnati Visitors

Celebrating half a century of Riverfest, Cincinnati will host its biggest fireworks display yet on Sunday, featuring a 1,500‑foot launch area, six barges, and additional pyrotechnics from the rooftops of Heritage Bank Center and the Newport on the Levee theater. Rozzi’s Famous Fireworks founder Joe Rozzi says the show is “three times the size of any show we’ve ever done here” and highlights new effects on the Taylor Southgate Bridge crown.

Plan Your Arrival

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) advises visitors to decide early which side of the Ohio River they will watch from and to secure parking before heading out. “Make sure you have a plan ahead of time,” KYTC spokesperson Jake Ryle said. “Figure out where you want to park and what city you want to be in.”

Drivers coming north on I‑71/75 from Kentucky should use the Fifth Street exit (Exit 192) into Covington. Those traveling south from Ohio can reach Covington via Fifth Street/Crescent Avenue (Exit 192) or Pike Street/12th Street/MLK Jr. Boulevard (Exit 191). Transportation officials will monitor key intersections and may adjust signal timing to keep traffic moving, while police will direct vehicles before and after the fireworks.

Bridge Closures Schedule

  • Purple People Bridge: closes at 8 a.m.
  • Taylor Southgate Bridge: east pedestrian walkway closes at 9 a.m.; vehicle lanes close at 6 p.m.; west pedestrian walkway closes at 7:30 p.m.
  • Roebling Suspension Bridge: closes to vehicles and pedestrians at 6 p.m.
  • Clay Wade Bailey Bridge: closes to vehicles at 6 p.m. and to pedestrians at 8 p.m.
  • Daniel Carter Beard Bridge/I‑471: local access from Ohio closes at 7 p.m.; northbound and southbound ramps to KY 8 close at 7:30 p.m.

Gates on the Cincinnati side will open at 3 p.m. on Sunday, giving early arrivals a chance to find a good viewing spot and enjoy the downtown area before the fireworks begin.

What to Expect from the Show

Rozzi’s team began setting up nine days before the event, a longer preparation period than usual. Workers faced challenging heat on the barges, feeling the sun’s rays above and the metal surface below. Despite the demanding conditions, Rozzi says the effort is “humbling” and worth it when he sees the crowd’s reaction. “The hair on the back of my neck still stands,” he added after a previous show.

The expanded display will feature additional fireworks launched from the crowns of both the Purple People and Taylor Southgate bridges, creating a spectacular river‑front panorama. With the increased size and new launch points, spectators can expect a longer, more vibrant show that celebrates Riverfest’s historic milestone.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Evening

  • Arrive early to secure parking and avoid last‑minute traffic snarls.
  • Consider public transportation or rideshare options to reduce congestion.
  • Follow all bridge closure signage and police directions.
  • Bring water, sunscreen, and a comfortable chair or blanket for the evening.
  • Stay aware of changing traffic signals and be prepared for detours.

By planning ahead and respecting the temporary closures, families and friends can fully enjoy Cincinnati’s 50th Riverfest fireworks—a celebration of community, tradition, and the city’s vibrant riverfront spirit.
