Ring introduces TAKE encryption to protect home‑camera footage

Ring, the Amazon‑owned home‑security camera maker, is rolling out a new encryption feature called TAKE – short for “throw away the key.” Starting in September, the technology will be the default setting on all Ring cameras nationwide.

TAKE stores video recordings in a cloud‑based digital vault that only the homeowner can unlock. Ring says it will retrieve the virtual key only temporarily to perform functions such as video search, and then permanently discard the key, ensuring the company has no ongoing access to the footage.

Company founder Jamie Siminoff told CNN the move is meant to give customers confidence that their recordings are protected from any third party, including law‑enforcement and Amazon itself. He emphasized that the encryption provides a “physical” layer of security beyond the company’s existing policies.

The new system is described as offering protection comparable to end‑to‑end encryption, but optimized for the multi‑device, multi‑user setups common among Ring users. Ring will continue to offer its earlier end‑to‑end encryption option as an alternative.

Addressing privacy concerns

Public unease about pervasive camera surveillance has grown, with critics pointing to the presence of cameras in homes, businesses, and public spaces. Ring has faced scrutiny over its partnerships with law‑enforcement agencies and past advertising that sparked privacy fears.

While TAKE limits Ring’s ability to view footage, users may still voluntarily share recordings with police through the Neighbors app if they choose.

Industry context

The rollout follows similar moves by other security‑camera firms, such as Flock’s recent introduction of police‑audit controls. Ring first offered end‑to‑end encryption in 2021 after pressure from privacy advocates, but the new TAKE technology is intended to be more flexible for households with multiple users and devices.

Siminoff hopes the added security will reduce anxiety among both Ring owners and neighbors who may see cameras on adjacent properties, allowing families to feel safer while protecting their privacy.
