Alabama residents rally behind Dolly Parton literacy license plate

In the wake of country music legend Dolly Parton’s death, Alabama families and community members have shown overwhelming enthusiasm for a proposed specialty license plate that will support her Imagination Library program. The plate, which would direct a portion of its fee to local literacy efforts, has jumped from about 40 initial commitments to more than 550 registrations within a single day.

License plate momentum builds quickly

Kaelyn Christian, the state director for the Imagination Library, told Fox News Digital that the rapid increase in interest has put the initiative well past the halfway mark toward the 1,000 plates needed for production. “It’s exploded over the last 24 hours,” Christian said, adding that she now feels confident the goal will be met.

How the plate supports families

Each specialty plate would cost drivers an annual fee, with roughly $50 of that amount earmarked for the Imagination Library in the county where the vehicle is registered. That recurring revenue creates a steady stream of funding for local partners who enroll children, distribute books, and promote reading in their communities.

Christian explained that the money generated by a single plate could cover the cost of providing books to two children each month for nearly two years—about 48 books. For families like her own, the impact is personal. Her nearly five‑year‑old son participates in the program and eagerly anticipates the monthly deliveries, often exclaiming, “Ms. Dolly sent me another book.”

Imagination Library’s reach in Alabama

Since its founding in 1995, the Imagination Library has delivered more than 300 million books worldwide. In Alabama, roughly 114,000 children are currently enrolled, and registrations have surged in the past 24 hours as word spreads about the new plate.

One parent shared that her children, who were about to graduate from the program, inspired her to purchase a plate so other families could enjoy the same experience. Another family, previously unable to afford books, reported that their middle‑schooler now reads 200 books a year thanks to the program.

State backing and future outlook

Alabama Governor Kay Ivey announced a statewide expansion of the Imagination Library in 2023, and the program now operates in all 67 counties. The state provides a 50 percent financial match for participating children, further strengthening the initiative’s sustainability.

Christian emphasized that the specialty plate is more than a tribute to Dolly Parton; it is a practical tool for families, churches, and community groups to ensure that children continue to receive books and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Community response

Local volunteers, churches, and civic organizations have rallied around the effort, viewing it as a way to honor Parton’s legacy while reinforcing family values and educational opportunity. The “boots on the ground”—the local partners who enroll children and promote the program—see the plate as a source of long‑term security for their literacy work.

As Alabama residents continue to sign up for the plate, the Imagination Library stands poised to expand its reach, delivering free books to more children and strengthening the bonds of family, faith, and community across the state.
