Rickea Jackson Tears ACL, Will Miss Remainder of 2026 Season

Chicago Sky forward Rickea Jackson will miss the rest of the 2026 season after tearing her left ACL during Sunday’s win over the Minnesota Lynx, the team confirmed Tuesday. The injury requires surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation, putting a sudden halt to a hot start with the Sky. The announcement landed hard across the league and in Chicago, where expectations had been rising for Jackson and the 3-1 start.

Jackson went down in the fourth quarter of a tightly contested matchup and was quickly evaluated by the Sky’s medical staff before undergoing further imaging that confirmed the ACL tear. The team says she will have surgery to repair the injury and enter a structured recovery plan tailored to her needs. That timeframe rules her out for the remainder of the WNBA season as she begins the long road back to full strength.

“We’re devastated that Rickea suffered this injury, but we are confident she will make a full recovery,” general manager Jeff Pagliocca said in a statement. “Rickea was playing at an All-Star and All-Defensive level early in the season. We are certain she was primed for a career year. Our world-class medical staff will work hard with Rickea, who is one of the toughest players in the league, to get her back on the court.”

Through the first four games of the campaign, Jackson was averaging 18 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2 assists per game, numbers that pointed to a clear breakout. The Sky were 3-1 in that stretch, with wins over the Golden State Valkyries, Portland Fire and Minnesota Lynx, and Jackson had been a focal point of the offense. Losing that kind of production disrupts a team’s tempo and shot distribution immediately.

Jackson’s path to Chicago began when she was selected fourth overall in the 2024 draft, and she spent her first two pro seasons with the Los Angeles Sparks. The Sky acquired her this offseason in a trade that sent Ariel Atkins to Los Angeles, a move that signaled Chicago’s intent to build around younger scoring options. Jackson had already begun to validate that decision with a confident start before the injury.

Head coach Tyler Marsh had been leaning on Jackson as a primary scoring option, giving her the green light to attack closeouts and create off the bounce. That role played to her strengths coming out of Tennessee, where she enjoyed a standout collegiate career and developed a reliable scoring bag. Her rookie average of 13.4 points and sophomore leap to 14.7 showed steady growth that suggested even bigger things were coming.

Chicago now faces immediate roster questions about how to replace those minutes and that usage rate while Jackson rehabs. Other Wings and forwards on the roster will need to pick up scoring and defensive assignments, and Marsh will have to balance short-term wins with the long-term development of the roster. The front office also has to consider contingency plans if the injury leaves gaps that the current rotation can’t cover.

Jackson’s ACL tear joins a troubling pattern in the WNBA this season, where several players have suffered similar injuries. She becomes part of a list that includes Cameron Brink, Nika Muhl, Courtney Vandersloot, Skylar Diggins, Georgia Amoore and Katie Lou Samuelson, among others, highlighting the sport’s physical toll. Teams and medical staffs are watching closely for trends in training, workload and recovery protocols.

Medically, ACL reconstruction and rehab are well-established but demanding processes that typically keep players sidelined for many months. The early stages focus on reducing swelling and regaining range of motion, followed by strength work and progressive on-court activity under close supervision. The exact timeline varies by individual, the specifics of the repair and how the knee responds to each phase.

The mood around the Sky is resolute rather than resigned; teammates and staff have rallied publicly and privately around Jackson since the announcement. Updates on her surgery and rehab will come from the team, and Chicago’s medical group will lead her through the milestones most important for a return to competitive play. Fans will be watching for signs of progress, hopeful that Jackson’s toughness and the club’s resources will get her back on the floor sooner rather than later.
