Andrew Rice, a 37-year-old democratic socialist from Milford, has decided to mount an independent run against U.S. Rep. Rosa DeLauro in November’s general election. Rice had been trying to challenge DeLauro from within the Democratic Party but will now run as an unaffiliated candidate.
Rice’s Platform
Rice’s priorities include securing funding for Medicare, education, and housing, as well as taxing billionaires and ending “forever wars” overseas. He believes voters want a more progressive candidate who is not beholden to party politics or corporations.
Rice will need to collect 3,290 signatures by Aug. 5 to get on the ballot. He may also try to run with Connecticut’s Independent Party, but will run as an unaffiliated candidate if they cannot reach a consensus.
Rice noted that around 40 percent of Connecticut voters are registered as unaffiliated or with a third party, indicating a lack of faith in both the Democratic and Republican parties. He believes there is a growing trend of people looking for candidates outside of the major parties.
