Gov. Larry Rhoden emerged as the Republican nominee for governor in South Dakota following a historic runoff election. Rhoden will face former Democratic lawmaker Dan Ahlers of Dell Rapids in the November election after defeating Aberdeen businessman Toby Doeden by a significant margin.

With over 71 percent of the ballots counted, Rhoden secured the nomination, while Doeden received 29 percent of the vote. The runoff election marked a first-in-state history event for South Dakota.
