Kizza Besigye, a prominent Ugandan opposition figure, collapsed in court on Wednesday and is now unconscious and in intensive care, according to his wife, Winnie Byanyima.

Besigye, 70, was standing trial for treason when he collapsed. He was taken to Mulago National Referral Hospital in the capital, Kampala, where he was admitted to an intensive care unit.
Byanyima, who also heads the United Nations AIDS programme UNAIDS, said her husband is unable to speak and is unresponsive to pain stimuli.
Besigye has been in custody since November 2024, after he was detained in neighboring Kenya and repatriated to Uganda, where he was charged with treason.
His lawyers, supporters, and rights activists claim that the charges are politically motivated and that his prolonged detention is part of an ongoing crackdown on opponents by long-ruling President Yoweri Museveni.
