Revolutionary War Soldiers Honored in Lake George, NY After 250 Years

In a moving Memorial Day ceremony, more than 40 Revolutionary War-era soldiers were finally laid to rest in Lake George, New York, after their remains were discovered at a construction site in 2019. The solemn event took place at the new Repose of the Fallen memorial in Lake George Battlefield Park, about 200 miles north of New York City.

Discovery and Historical Context

The remains were unearthed during routine construction work and were identified as soldiers from the Revolutionary War, specifically linked to the 1775–1776 Quebec Campaign. Among the remains were also those of a woman and a child, highlighting the hardships faced by families during wartime.

Artifacts found with the remains, such as pewter military buttons from the First Pennsylvania Battalion, helped date the site and connect it to a makeshift smallpox hospital at Fort George, where these soldiers were likely housed.

Ceremony and Significance

On the eve of the 250th anniversary of America’s fight for independence, the soldiers were given full ceremonial honors, a tribute they likely did not receive at the time of their deaths. The procession from the New York State Museum in Albany to Lake George was marked by vintage military vehicles and American flags, with spectators lining the route to pay their respects.

Jennifer Saunders, the museum’s executive director, emphasized the importance of preserving these soldiers’ stories, ensuring they are remembered as individuals who served and sacrificed for the nation’s freedom.

Lisa Anderson, the museum’s curator of bioarchaeology, noted that the discovery adds a new chapter to Lake George’s history, which has been more commonly associated with the French and Indian War. The reinterment of these soldiers serves as a dignified closure to their long journey, honoring their contributions to America’s independence.
