Comal County Officials Stress Water Safety for Memorial Day

As Memorial Day weekend approaches, Comal County officials are prioritizing water safety for residents and visitors planning to enjoy the rivers and lakes. With large crowds expected at the Comal River, New Braunfels police and fire department personnel will be present to ensure safety and provide guidance on water regulations.

Safety Recommendations

New Braunfels Fire Chief Ruy Lozano strongly advises everyone, particularly those who are not strong swimmers, to wear life jackets. These are available for free before entering the water. Lozano also cautions against excessive alcohol consumption in the heat, emphasizing the importance of staying hydrated with high-electrolyte fluids.

New Braunfels Police Chief Osvaldo Flores highlights the enforcement of DUI laws and encourages the use of rideshare options to ensure safe transportation. Meanwhile, Bexar County Game Warden Roland Fuentes reminds boaters that life jackets are mandatory for all passengers, with children 12 and under required to wear them when the boat is in motion. Additionally, a fire extinguisher must be on board, and individuals born after September 1, 1993, must complete a boater education course to operate a boat.

Community Efforts

The emphasis on safety reflects the community’s commitment to ensuring a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend for all. Local authorities are prepared to assist and educate the public, reinforcing the importance of responsible behavior on the water.
