Restaurant Chains Shift to Wellness Drinks as GLP-1 Medications Reduce Alcohol Demand

The National Restaurant Association’s 2026 Beverage Trends report reveals a clear shift in the U.S. dining landscape. As GLP‑1 weight‑loss medications become more common, restaurant operators are preparing to meet a growing demand for non‑alcoholic options.

Health‑Driven Changes in Drink Choices

Surveys of consumers and restaurant owners across the country indicate that health considerations are already influencing alcohol consumption. Among adults who reported not drinking alcohol, 25% cited health reasons, a figure that rises to 34% for Gen Z non‑drinkers.

Chief economist Chad Moutray said the trend reflects a broader “Make America Healthy Again” movement, especially among younger diners who are looking for lower‑calorie, lower‑sugar alternatives. He noted that GLP‑1 drugs suppress appetite, which often translates into reduced alcohol intake.

Restaurants Respond with New Menus

Limited‑service operators are planning significant menu changes for 2026. According to the report, 24% intend to add new wellness drinks, 26% will introduce more energy drinks, 29% plan to offer additional smoothies, and 27% aim to expand lemonades. Nearly half—46%—are set to broaden coffee selections.

Hospitality consultant Derek Brown, founder of Drink Company, confirmed that the effect of GLP‑1 drugs is part of a larger moderation trend. “There’s no doubt that GLP‑1s are having an effect on the way people consume,” he told Fox News Digital, adding that many customers are choosing non‑alcoholic alternatives.

Alcohol Remains Popular, but Choices Are Expanding

Despite the shift, alcohol consumption among younger adults remains strong. The report found that 71% of Gen Z adults and 74% of millennials still drink alcohol at home or in restaurants, with 60% of Gen Z and 68% of millennials drinking on‑premise.

Restaurant operators see the broader beverage portfolio as a way to attract traffic and improve profit margins. “Beverages can be an important driver of customer traffic,” Moutray said, noting that 87% of full‑service and 80% of limited‑service operators view drinks as a key revenue source.

Looking Ahead

As GLP‑1 medications become more affordable and their use expands into 2027, the industry expects continued growth in wellness‑focused drink offerings. Operators are positioning themselves to serve diners who prioritize health without sacrificing variety.

The evolving beverage landscape underscores how medical advances can ripple through the hospitality sector, prompting businesses to adapt to the preferences of a health‑conscious public.
