Republicans weigh midterm risks as Iran conflict drives gas prices

Republican officials across the nation are feeling the pressure of the Iran conflict as it stretches into its sixth month. While the war has pushed gasoline prices higher, many GOP candidates are hesitant to break publicly with President Donald Trump, who remains popular within the party despite the growing unpopularity of the overseas action.

Veteran lawmaker urges swift action

Rep. Zach Nunn of Iowa, a combat veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, told reporters on Monday that Republicans need to address the situation now and see it through. He contrasted his stance with what he described as Democratic calls to “just give up” on the conflict.

Strategic concerns from party operatives

Barrett Marson, a Republican strategist based in Arizona, said the party faces a “balancing act on the thinnest of wires” as it tries to support the president while acknowledging voter pain over higher gas prices. Marson noted that only one person in Washington appears indifferent to fuel costs, yet that individual heavily influences national policy.

Senator voices frustration

Sen. Jim Justice of West Virginia, speaking in Washington, called the war a “mess” and urged Republicans to do a better job of addressing economic concerns. He warned that voters are feeling the strain and that the party must stay in touch with everyday Americans.

House leadership links conflict to price spikes

House Speaker Mike Johnson, a close ally of Trump, acknowledged that the Iran conflict is a primary driver of rising gas prices, describing it as “drug on” the American economy. Johnson expressed optimism that a new phase of the conflict could bring fuel and grocery prices back down.

Trump’s stance and campaign financing

President Trump has downplayed the impact of higher gas prices and said he will “never apologize” for taking military action against Iran. Although he is not on the ballot in November, he has authorized the use of millions of dollars from his personal political action committee to aid vulnerable Republican candidates.

Polling shows limited approval

A Reuters/Ipsos poll released Monday found that only three in ten voters approve of Trump’s handling of the Iran situation. Democrats are using the low approval numbers to make the war a central theme of their campaign messaging.

Democratic attacks and ad campaigns

During a rally in Atlanta, Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia criticized Trump for what he called “lying a nation into war” and treating citizens as fools. A Democratic‑aligned group, VoteVets, launched an ad targeting Sen. Dan Sullivan of Alaska, linking the senator’s votes to $9‑per‑gallon gasoline prices in the state.

Republican outliers push for limits

Among House Republicans, Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan and Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania have voted to limit the president’s war powers, but they remain exceptions in a caucus that largely supports continuing the military effort.

Candidate perspectives on the conflict

Rep. Jen Kiggans of Virginia, speaking on a recent podcast, said she hopes for a “quick resolution” but affirmed her support for the president’s objectives, emphasizing the need to keep Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. She reiterated her backing of the military and the families of service members.

Party messaging on national security

The National Republican Congressional Committee framed the upcoming election as a choice between Republicans committed to disarming Iran and Democrats who have “bankrolled the regime” for a decade. A spokesperson highlighted the party’s record on safety, border security, lower costs, tax cuts, and common‑sense governance.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee responded by accusing Republicans of “blindly following Donald Trump’s ego” and warned that defending an endless war would cost the GOP its majority in the House.
