Republican Lawmakers Push Back on Trump’s Iran War Powers and Beef Tariffs

In the weeks leading up to the 2026 midterms, a handful of Republican members of the U.S. House have taken steps that diverge from President Trump’s preferred foreign‑policy stance. Two Iowa representatives, Zach Nunn and Mariannette Miller‑Meeks, joined six other GOP members in voting for a resolution to curb the president’s war‑powers authority over Iran. The move marks the largest group of Republicans to support such a measure to date.

Administration’s Response

When asked about the votes, the White House referred the comment to the Republican National Committee. RNC spokeswoman Natalie Baldassarre said, “Republicans are unified and rowing in the same direction, but we also recognize the political reality of the moment. At the end of the day, we care about winning, and these candidates need to run the races necessary to accomplish that.”

Local Representatives Voice Their Reasons

Miller‑Meeks told CNN she could not support an open‑ended war that would force Iowans to pay higher fuel prices, saying, “I will not vote to keep our soldiers in an open‑ended war, with Iowans paying too much at the pump.” Nunn echoed a similar sentiment, noting he raised concerns about the administration’s decisions in a private meeting with Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and later brought those concerns directly to President Trump at a White House dinner for battleground Republicans.

In Florida, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar ran an ad criticizing what she called an overreach in the president’s immigration enforcement, prompting Trump to respond that he still backs her reelection but believes she has become “a little bit soft on the border.”

Economic Pressures and Trade Policy

Farm‑state Republicans have also expressed frustration with Trump’s pause on tariffs against foreign beef, a move intended to ease price pressures for consumers. In Texas’ 23rd District, GOP nominee Brandon Herrera publicly opposed the administration’s plan to build a border wall in Big Bend National Park, a stance that appears to have been met with a receptive tone from the White House, according to a campaign aide.

Vice President JD Vance has taken a conciliatory tone, telling Republican lawmakers they must “level” with voters about the war’s political peril. He recently campaigned with Kansas Sen. Roger Marshall, who wrote to the administration requesting relief from rising diesel costs tied to the conflict.

Party Unity Versus Independent Thinking

Not all Republicans see distancing from the president as a viable strategy. Wisconsin Rep. Derrick Van Orden warned that colleagues trying to separate themselves for political gain are “dumb,” emphasizing the president’s role as an “independent thinker.”

Even as some GOP members push back, the administration has not taken punitive action. Speaker Mike Johnson noted that President Trump was “not upset” with members who voted to limit his executive authority on tariffs, and the president has not publicly reprimanded the Iowa lawmakers.

Public Opinion

A recent Quinnipiac University survey found that a majority of voters disapproved of President Trump’s handling of the Iran situation by more than a two‑to‑one margin. While the poll reflects a challenging environment, the administration continues to stress that winning the midterms remains the top priority.

Looking Ahead

As the midterm campaign intensifies, Republican candidates in competitive districts will need to balance loyalty to President Trump with the concerns of their constituents on issues such as war powers, immigration enforcement, and agricultural trade. The administration’s emphasis on unity and electoral success suggests it will continue to accommodate dissenting voices while keeping the broader GOP agenda on track.
