As America celebrates its 250th birthday, Rep. Roger Williams reflects on the importance of small businesses in driving the US economy. With 250 years of history, America’s story has been written behind the counters of family-owned stores, on ranches and farms passed down through generations, and on Main Street where hardworking Americans take risks, open their doors, and build something from the ground up.
Entrepreneurial Spirit
Rep. Williams, who spent decades helping grow his family’s business in Texas, understands the value of hard work and determination. He notes that the Founding Fathers were entrepreneurs in their own right, visionaries and risk-takers who charted a new course for a nation built on freedom and opportunity.
The US Chamber of Commerce recently found that small businesses have accounted for about 78% of all hiring in the country since 2001. Since early last year, small businesses have created roughly 4 million jobs a month and more than three-quarters of all new job openings. This growth is attributed to the Working Families Tax Cuts, which prevented a $5 trillion tax hike and put money back into the pockets of hardworking American families.
Supporting Small Businesses
Rep. Williams encourages Americans to support small businesses in their communities, particularly on this Independence Day. By doing so, we can help keep the economy moving forward and ensure that America’s greatest days are still ahead.
