Rep. Mike Simpson wins 15th term representing Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District

Voters in Idaho’s 2nd Congressional District reaffirmed their support for longtime Republican incumbent Rep. Mike Simpson on Tuesday night, sending him back to Washington for a 15th term in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Election results

The Associated Press called the race after Simpson captured 51.5 percent of the vote, totaling 159,148 ballots. His Democratic opponent, Elinor Gilbreath, earned 40.6 percent, or 125,562 votes. Third‑party candidates – Libertarian Will Johanson and Independents Emre Houser and Tripp Hutchinson – also appeared on the ballot but did not affect the overall outcome.

Local impact

Simpson’s district stretches across eastern Idaho, encompassing Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls and much of the Magic Valley. Residents who turned out for the election will see Simpson continue to advocate for the region’s agricultural interests, water‑rights issues, and rural economic development, priorities he has championed throughout his tenure.

Background on the incumbent

Before his first election to Congress in 1998, Simpson practiced dentistry and served in the Idaho Legislature, including a stint as speaker of the Idaho House. His deep roots in Idaho Falls and long‑standing service have made him a familiar figure in the district, helping him maintain a solid base of support among conservative voters.

Primary and campaign overview

Simpson secured the Republican nomination in May after defeating challengers Brian Keene and Perry Shumway in the primary. His campaign focused on preserving traditional values, supporting small‑business growth, and protecting the constitutional rights of Idaho families. Gilbreath, the Democratic nominee, emphasized expanding access to health care and investing in education, but her message failed to resonate sufficiently in a district that has consistently leaned Republican.

What’s next

With the election settled, Simpson will join his fellow Idaho delegation members in the 118th Congress, where he is expected to continue his work on the House Appropriations Committee and the Natural Resources Committee. Constituents can anticipate his ongoing advocacy for policies that align with the district’s agricultural heritage and the broader goals of limited government and individual liberty.

Local officials and community leaders have already begun preparing for the upcoming legislative session, looking to collaborate with Simpson on projects that support infrastructure improvements, water‑conservation initiatives, and job creation throughout the Magic Valley.
