Rambler’s Rest: Lincoln Park Is Better Than You Think

People always assume Lincoln Park is just a cut-through. You drive past the tennis courts on 14th Avenue, maybe you notice the old shelter house, and you think: fine, another city park. I thought the same thing the first time a neighbor mentioned it. I figured she was making conversation. She wasn’t.

Lincoln Park sits on Kenosha’s near north side, roughly bounded by 14th and 16th Avenues and stretching between 55th and 60th Streets — a few blocks inland from the lakefront, far enough that the tourist foot traffic doesn’t reach it. It’s one of the older parks in the city system, and it shows in the best possible way: the trees here are enormous. Sugar maples, oaks, cottonwoods with trunks you can’t get your arms around. In October the canopy goes full amber and rust, and the light through it at around four in the afternoon is genuinely something.

What caught me off guard was how much was actually going on. There’s a decent playground area that families use hard on summer evenings, a spray pad that runs through August and draws every kid in a six-block radius, and a wading pool situation that feels lifted from about 1962, which I mean as a compliment. The tennis courts are free and in reasonable shape — bring your own rackets and your own patience for the occasional cracked surface, but they fill up with leagues on weekend mornings, which tells you they’re being used by people who care.

The shelter house is the thing worth pausing at. It’s a stone-and-timber WPA-era structure, built in the 1930s, and it has that particular civic solidity that you don’t get out of anything constructed in the last forty years. The city uses it for seasonal events — I caught a free summer concert there last July, folding chairs set up on the grass, maybe a hundred people, a bluegrass trio that was better than expected. Nobody was selling anything. Kids were running around in the dark catching fireflies by the second set. It cost nothing.

Bring a lunch if you want to eat — there’s no concession stand, and the nearest food is a short drive toward 52nd Street. But the picnic tables under the old oaks are legitimately pleasant, and on a weekday you’ll often have a whole section of them to yourself. The park doesn’t have the lakefront views or the manicured feel of Simmons Island, and it’s not trying to. It’s a neighborhood park doing exactly what neighborhood parks should do, which is give people a place to be outside without an agenda.

Parking is free along the surrounding streets and rarely competitive. The park itself has no admission, no passes required. I’ve taken visiting friends here when I didn’t want to fight the lakefront crowd, and every single one of them said some version of: I didn’t expect this. That reaction, honestly, is part of why I keep going back.

Spring through fall is when it’s at its peak, though the trail loop through the trees is a reasonable winter walk when the paths are clear. If you’ve been defaulting to the lakefront every time you want a few hours outside in Kenosha, Lincoln Park is worth the mild detour to see what the city’s residential parks actually feel like when they’re working right.
