Renton, Washington, has seen a decrease in gun-related crimes since 2023, according to a recent update from the Renton Police Department. Crime analyst Abby Elliot presented the data at the July 20 Renton Committee of the Whole meeting, showing that firearm-related crimes, such as murder and manslaughter cases, robberies, assault with firearms, drive-by shootings, and illegal discharge with a firearm, have declined since peaking in 2023.

Causes of the Decrease

Police sergeant Eric Gordon attributed the increase in 2023 to the COVID-19 pandemic, stating that the acceptance of face coverings during COVID may have contributed to the rise in gun-related crimes. However, as the pandemic has subsided, the number of gun incidents has decreased.

The data shows that the highest activity for gun cases is on weekends and from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m., with January and July having the highest instances of gun-related cases. A heat map of Renton revealed that the downtown core and the Renton Highlands have the highest concentration of these crimes.

Community Partnerships

The Renton Police Department has been working with community groups, such as Community Passageways and Urban Families, to help youth avoid gangs and reduce gun violence. Deputy Chief Ryan Rutledge emphasized the importance of these partnerships in building trust and reducing crime.

The Violent Crimes Unit (VCU), created in 2022, has made a significant impact in reducing gun-related crimes. The unit has made 215 felony arrests since 2023 and has taken 66 guns off the streets, including semi-automatic rifles and unserialized, untraceable firearms assembled at home.
