The Renton Police Department has acquired a new device to keep the skies safe from drones during the World Cup. The Dedrone Rapid Response Trailer allows officers to monitor restricted airspace around Renton Landing and the Seattle Sounders training facility.
How it Works
If a drone enters a restricted space, the system receives the drone’s remote ID, which pinpoints the controller’s location. The camera on the trailer enables officers to monitor the drone and ensure it does not pose a threat to the public. Officers can then contact the controller and educate them on the laws and regulations regarding drone flight in the city of Renton.
The trailer does not force drones to land but rather gives officers the chance to ensure everyone is flying safely and legally. According to Sergeant Nick Sangder, most pilots are recreational and are not aware of the strict rules near the airport or the temporary FIFA restrictions.
The police acquired the trailer from Axon Enterprise Inc. in a 10-year contract worth $1,567,151.59. The Dedrone trailer is part of a larger package to modernize the city’s public safety systems, including translating body cameras and a real-time crime center.
