The City of Richardson announced that its flagship library will reopen this fall after a multi‑year renovation that dramatically expands space for families, teens and adults. The temporary location, which has served patrons since 2023, will close on Oct. 11 so staff can move books, equipment and the new furnishings into the renovated building.
Bright new design and improved access
Key upgrades include larger windows that flood the interior with natural light, a striking glass‑enclosed staircase and a relocated main entrance on the southeast corner, complete with a dedicated drop‑off lane for patrons. These changes are intended to make the library more welcoming and easier to navigate for all visitors.
Youth services grow up – literally
Youth Services Supervisor Shay Brooks told the Public Library Board that the renovation “gives youth services room to grow up, literally.” The library’s youngest patrons – babies, toddlers and preschoolers – will have a dedicated discovery space on the main level, stocked with thousands of age‑appropriate books and a hands‑on play wall that encourages tactile exploration.
Brooks highlighted a new “discovery activity table” featuring blocks and a light‑box table with translucent letters and numbers, designed to spark curiosity and early literacy. A cozy “cave” under the stairs offers a quieter nook for families who prefer a calmer environment.
Expanded spaces for older children and teens
Children ages 6‑12 will move to the second floor, where a purpose‑built area will provide a mix of easy chapter books, graphic novels, nonfiction and biography collections aimed at newly independent readers. The floor will also host a laptop kiosk, a bean‑bag pit and a wall‑size Scrabble board for collaborative play.
The new teen zone, serving ages 13‑18, includes two study rooms, TV monitors with laptop connectivity, whiteboards and a variety of seating options. “Teens have a constructive place to meet up, hang out, accomplish tasks and do life away from home or school,” Brooks said. The space also allows for future expansion of the young‑adult collection, including fiction, nonfiction, graphic novels and manga.
Community‑focused amenities
Beyond youth services, the renovation adds a large event space, a test kitchen for cooking classes and a makerspace that will host adult, teen and children’s programs. These facilities are designed to support a wide range of community activities, from culinary workshops to hands‑on STEM projects.
Digital library resources will remain available after the temporary site closes, though most in‑person programs will pause until the grand opening later this fall.
