Reno Field Day Offers Free Radio‑Control Flying for Adults with Disabilities

Reno families and community members are invited to a unique, free‑of‑charge field day on Sept. 19 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Reno Radio Control Club Airfield. The event, organized by the Nevada Center for Excellence in Disabilities and the Nevada Assistive Technology Resource Center, provides adults with physical disabilities a hands‑on opportunity to fly radio‑controlled airplanes.

Accessible equipment designed for all abilities

Students from the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Engineering have engineered specially adapted radio controllers that accommodate upper‑extremity weakness. These devices replace standard controllers, allowing participants who struggle with traditional equipment to manipulate the aircraft safely and confidently.

Supportive volunteers guide newcomers

Members of the Reno Radio Control Club will be on site to demonstrate techniques, answer questions, and assist each participant throughout the morning. No prior experience is required; volunteers will walk attendees through the basics of take‑off, navigation, and landing.

Why the event matters

“Many people, especially with more significant disabilities, have difficulty participating in hobbies and community activities like this,” said Scott Youngs, Senior Project Manager for the Nevada Assistive Technology Resource Center. “This is another option we want to offer to them to go out, have fun, and engage in an activity that they may need a little bit of help to participate in.” The field day underscores Reno’s commitment to inclusive recreation and demonstrates how local partnerships can create meaningful experiences for all citizens.

Practical details for attendees

The event is open to the public and requires no registration. Participants should arrive early to secure a spot at the airfield. Directions and additional information are available on the Reno Radio Control Club’s website. Families are encouraged to bring snacks, water, and any needed mobility aids; the venue is fully accessible.

Community impact

By offering a free, adaptive hobby experience, the collaboration highlights the power of faith‑based and civic organizations working together to strengthen families and uphold the dignity of every individual. The field day not only provides a fun pastime but also fosters confidence, social interaction, and a sense of accomplishment for adults who might otherwise feel excluded from such activities.

Local leaders and volunteers hope the success of this event will inspire similar inclusive programs throughout Nevada, reinforcing the state’s tradition of supporting families, faith, and individual liberty.
