Reno adds 900 jobs in July as Nevada unemployment rate slips to 5%

Reno’s labor market showed solid progress in July, with the city adding 900 jobs, according to the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s latest economic report. Seasonally adjusted employment in Reno rose 0.3% from June and was up 300 jobs, or 0.1%, compared with July 2025.

Statewide trends support local gains

Across Nevada, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined by 0.1 percentage point, moving from 5.1% in June to 5.0% in July. The state’s labor force contracted slightly, shedding 5,077 workers during the same period, but overall employment rose by 4,000 jobs, bringing the total to 1,612,500 non‑farm positions.

Year‑over‑year growth was led by professional services and health‑care sectors, each posting increases of more than 4%. The statewide job growth rate of just over 1% contrasts with a national decline of 23,000 jobs in the same month, according to the department’s data.

Comparisons with other Nevada cities

While Reno posted gains, Carson City experienced a loss of 200 jobs, a 0.6% drop from June, and a 1.2% decline from July 2025. Las Vegas added 2,300 jobs from June, a 0.2% increase, and was up 9,900 jobs, or 0.8%, compared with July 2025.

Official commentary

David Schmidt, chief economist for the department, said, “July’s report highlights a steady labor market in Nevada as we enter the second half of the year. Year‑over‑year job growth remains solid at just over 1%, with professional services and health care leading the way at more than 4% growth. Compared to June, Nevada added 4,000 jobs, in contrast to the national decline of 23,000 jobs. The unemployment rate and labor force participation rate both fell compared to June, mirroring national trends.”

Where to find more data

Additional labor‑market statistics, including detailed industry breakdowns and county‑level figures, are available through the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s employment and unemployment dashboards.

These numbers suggest that Reno’s economy continues to attract workers, particularly in sectors that align with traditional family stability and community health, such as professional services and health care. Residents and local businesses can view the full data set to better understand employment trends that affect wages, housing demand, and overall quality of life in the city.
