Browns and Bills hold joint practice in Ohio as quarterback battle unfolds

On Thursday, the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills met for a joint preseason practice at the Cleveland Browns’ training facility in Berea, Ohio. The session gave local fans a rare up‑close look at what a franchise quarterback looks like, as the Browns continue to decide between Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders for the starting role.

Josh Allen’s display

Buffalo’s star quarterback, Josh Allen, led the Bills in a series of precise throws despite missing two of his top wide receivers to injury. Allen connected with tight end Dalton Kincaid for a long touchdown and repeatedly demonstrated the poise that has made the Bills a preseason favorite in the AFC. “It was good to see the guys step up and make plays,” Allen said, noting the energy and speed of the practice.

Quarterback competition for Cleveland

Both Watson and Sanders split snaps against Buffalo’s defense, providing first‑year Browns head coach Todd Monken with valuable data. Watson, who started the previous exhibition game in Chicago, threw a 30‑yard pass to rookie KC Concepcion Jr. before later throwing an interception inside Buffalo’s 20‑yard line. Sanders delivered several solid throws, including a completion to Malachi Corley over the middle of the field.

Monken praised both quarterbacks, saying the offense functioned well and that the players “belonged” on the field. He noted that the team showed the ability to move the ball and score, which is exactly what the Browns are looking for as they approach the final decision on their No. 1 quarterback.

Injuries and other notes

The practice was not without setbacks. Browns defensive end Alex Wright was carted off after a 1‑on‑1 drill with Bills tackle Spencer Brown, sustaining an apparent lower‑leg injury. Wright, who recorded 5½ sacks last season, was seen limping off the field. Running back Quinshon Judkins missed his second consecutive practice due to a minor, unspecified injury, which coach Monken described as “nothing big.”

Despite the physical intensity, the session remained largely civil. Both teams exchanged words, but no fights broke out. Monken described the atmosphere as “a little edgy, but not over the top,” emphasizing that competition is expected and healthy.

Player interactions

Bills tackle Dion Dawkins and Browns defensive end Jared Verse engaged in a light‑hearted exchange, with Dawkins complimenting Verse’s bull rush and calling himself a “Verse fan.” The banter highlighted the mutual respect between the squads despite the competitive nature of the practice.

Overall, the joint practice gave Cleveland’s coaching staff a clearer picture of each quarterback’s strengths and areas for improvement, while Buffalo’s Josh Allen reminded everyone of the high level of play required to succeed in the league.
