Reflecting Pool Refilled After Trump’s ‘American Flag Blue’ Renovation

The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in Washington, D.C., is being refilled with water after undergoing a renovation directed by President Donald Trump. The renovation involved repainting the pool in a shade dubbed ‘American flag blue.’ This initiative marks another effort by Trump to leave a lasting impression on the nation’s capital.

Renovation Details

President Trump announced the completion of the painting work from the Oval Office, showcasing a video of water beginning to fill the newly painted basin. The administration had previously stated in a court filing that the pool would be filled by Sunday. The renovation, which Trump estimated to cost between $1.5 million and $2 million, has actually seen contracts awarded totaling at least $14.8 million.

The Reflecting Pool, originally constructed in the 1920s, is a significant landmark located between the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. It was notably the site of Martin Luther King Jr.’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech in 1963. The pool, which holds about 6.5 million gallons of water, underwent a previous renovation in 2012 to implement a circulation and filtration system using water from the nearby Tidal Basin instead of the city’s drinking water.

Future Plans and Controversies

In addition to the pool’s renovation, Trump announced plans for a pedestrian ‘promenade’ extending from the Lincoln Memorial to the Potomac River. While he mentioned the possibility of naming it the ‘Trump Promenade,’ he expressed uncertainty about the name.

Critics have voiced concerns about the focus on such projects, arguing that more attention should be given to pressing issues like the cost of living. A lawsuit from the Cultural Landscape Foundation sought to halt the renovation, claiming the new color resembled a ‘theme park.’ However, the court has not yet issued an order, and the administration confirmed the project’s completion.

This renovation is part of a broader pattern of projects under Trump’s leadership, including the demolition of the White House East Wing for a new ballroom and plans for an arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
