Reese and Clark Embrace Teamwork as USA Dominates World Cup Quarterfinal

In a refreshing display of camaraderie, Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream and Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever are showing that rivalry can turn into partnership when they wear the United States jersey. The two stars, who sparked heated debates during their 2023 NCAA title clash, helped the USA women’s basketball team cruise to a 108‑56 victory over Hungary in the World Cup quarterfinal on Thursday.

Shared Goals on the International Stage

Both Reese and Clark emphasized that the narratives circulating on social media do not reflect their true relationship. Clark called the rumors “false takes” and praised the “fiery competitiveness” she shares with Reese. “No matter what, there’s always going to be people that create those narratives and say whatever they want to say,” she said. “We just come in here and compete.”

Reese echoed the sentiment, noting that the two know each other’s games “like the back of each other’s hand.” She added, “We just continue to build chemistry because we know we’re going to be USA teammates for a while.”

On‑Court Chemistry Evident

The quarterfinal showcased the duo’s growing rapport. Early in the first quarter, a well‑timed pick‑and‑roll set up a layup for Reese, and later in the game Reese returned the favor with a fast‑break lay‑in for Clark. “She’s got it for me a lot of times, so it’s probably finally due for me to get one to her,” Reese said with a smile.

Both players also recalled lighter moments from the tournament. When Clark entered the game against China before the official signal, Reese pulled her back to avoid a referee warning. “Well, the ref had gotten mad at me a couple of times prior, so she was saving me from the ref getting mad at me again,” Clark laughed.

From College Rivals to National Teammates

The partnership is especially notable given their storied college rivalry. Reese’s LSU Tigers defeated Clark’s Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2023 NCAA championship, a game that turned both athletes into focal points of national conversation. Yet, both have moved beyond that chapter, joining the 2024 WNBA All‑Star team that beat the U.S. Olympic squad and now representing the United States together.

Reese praised Clark’s relentless drive, saying, “It’s been fun to be able to play with her.” Clark, in turn, highlighted Reese’s desire to win, noting that the competitive fire they bring to the court elevates the whole team.

Looking Ahead to the WNBA Playoffs

While the World Cup provides a platform for their teamwork, the two will soon return to opposite sides of the WNBA. Both the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever sit at 26‑14 and are poised for the postseason. If the current seedings hold, a first‑round showdown could reignite their on‑court rivalry, this time with playoff stakes.

For now, their shared focus remains on representing the United States and continuing to grow the sport. Their positive dynamic offers a hopeful narrative for fans of women’s basketball across the nation, reinforcing the idea that competition can coexist with mutual respect.
