New London Opens Eagle Scout‑Built Outdoor Archery Range

NEW LONDON, WI — The City of New London officially opened a brand‑new outdoor archery range on Wednesday, marking the culmination of a year‑long Eagle Scout service project. The ribbon‑cutting ceremony was attended by city officials, family members, and local volunteers who gathered to celebrate the addition of a family‑friendly recreational amenity.

Scout‑Led Project Brings Community Vision to Life

Colton Swanson, a candidate for the Eagle Scout rank with BSA Troop 59, spearheaded the project after submitting his proposal to the city in July of last year. City leaders had long wanted an archery range for residents, but previous attempts stalled. Swanson’s dedication and organized approach moved the idea forward, securing funding, sourcing materials, and coordinating the construction schedule.

Over the past twelve months, Swanson managed every phase of the build. He obtained the necessary supplies, drafted structural drawings, and set realistic timelines. He also organized meetings with city staff, contractors, and volunteers to keep the project on track. The work had to be completed before his 18th birthday, a deadline he met by finishing the range on August 28. He turned 18 a week later, on September 4.

Eagle Scout Requirements Met Through Service

In addition to the archery range, Swanson earned the 21 merit badges required for the Eagle Scout rank, including the 13 mandatory badges and eight of his own choosing. He demonstrated leadership within Troop 59, lived the Scout Oath and Law, participated in a Scoutmaster conference, and completed a board of review. Only about six percent of Scouts achieve the Eagle Scout rank, underscoring the significance of Swanson’s accomplishment.

Range Features and Community Benefits

The new range includes multiple shooting lanes, safety barriers, and a covered target area, making it suitable for beginners and experienced archers alike. City officials highlighted the range’s potential to attract families, support youth programs, and provide a safe, structured environment for outdoor recreation. The facility is expected to host local tournaments, school events, and community gatherings, reinforcing New London’s commitment to active, family‑oriented amenities.

Mayor [Mayor’s Name] praised Swanson’s effort, stating, “Colton’s dedication exemplifies the spirit of service that strengthens our community. This range will be a lasting resource for families and youth, encouraging healthy outdoor activity.” City Council member [Council Member’s Name] added that the project demonstrates how public‑private partnerships and volunteerism can bring valuable projects to fruition without burdening taxpayers.

Looking Ahead

With the archery range now open, city officials plan to promote the facility through local schools, scouting groups, and recreational clubs. They also intend to monitor usage and gather feedback to ensure the range meets community needs. Swanson’s achievement serves as an inspiring example for other young leaders seeking to make a tangible impact in New London.

Residents interested in trying the new archery range can contact the City Parks Department for hours of operation and safety guidelines. The city encourages families to take advantage of this new venue and to consider future volunteer opportunities that support local projects.
