Redding and Shasta County host free nonpartisan forums for city council and county candidates

Redding residents and voters throughout Shasta County now have a clear opportunity to meet the candidates seeking seats on local governing bodies. Beginning this week and running through early October, three community organizations are sponsoring a slate of free, nonpartisan forums that cover the key issues facing each race.

Forum schedule and locations

Shasta Environmental Alliance will host a discussion focused on environmental and climate concerns affecting the Redding community. The forum for Redding City Council candidates is set for Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. at Pilgrim Congregational Church, 2850 Foothill Blvd., Redding. Attendees may submit written questions in person or ahead of time.

Redding Chamber of Commerce is holding two business‑oriented forums. The first, for Redding City Council hopefuls, will take place on Sept. 16 from 5:30‑7 p.m. at the Cascade Theatre, 1731 Market St., Redding. The chamber will generate its own questions and will not provide them to candidates in advance, ensuring a candid dialogue about local economic issues.

Redding League of Women Voters will run several forums covering a range of local races. These include:

  • Anderson City Council – Sept. 17 at 5:30 p.m., Frontier Senior Center, 2081 Frontier Trail, Anderson.
  • City of Shasta Lake Council – Sept. 24 at 5:30 p.m., Larry J. Farr Community Center, 4499 Main St., Shasta Lake.
  • Redding City Council – Sept. 30 at 5:30 p.m., Sequoia Middle School – McLaughlin Auditorium, 1805 Sequoia St., Redding.
  • Shasta County District 5 Supervisor – Sept. 14 at 5:30‑6:30 p.m., Gaia Hotel & Spa, 4125 Riverside Place, Anderson.
  • Shasta County Office of Education Board – Oct. 7 at 5:30 p.m., Larry J. Farr Community Center, 4499 Main St., Shasta Lake.

All events are open to the public, free of charge, and will allow audience members to submit written questions either on site or in advance.

Why these forums matter

Local elections often hinge on voter familiarity with the candidates and their positions. By providing a neutral platform, the League of Women Voters, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Environmental Alliance help ensure that voters can make informed choices based on issues that matter to families, faith communities, and small businesses. These forums also give candidates a chance to articulate how they will protect traditional family values, promote economic growth, and safeguard individual liberty at the municipal level.

How to participate

Anyone interested in attending should arrive early to secure a seat, as space may be limited. For those unable to attend in person, most organizers will accept written questions submitted via email or through their websites prior to the event. Contact information for each organization is available on their respective websites.

With the November election approaching, these forums represent a vital step toward a transparent and engaged democratic process in Redding and the surrounding communities.
