Red panda Randall passes away at Indianapolis Zoo’s Forests exhibit

Visitors to the Indianapolis Zoo will no longer see Randall the red panda in the Forests exhibit. Zoo staff discovered the animal dead on Friday while preparing the habitat for opening. According to the zoo, Randall’s death appears to have been natural and peaceful.

Randall’s time at the zoo

Randall arrived at the Indianapolis Zoo in 2024. At the time of his death he was 12 years old, an age that exceeds the typical lifespan of red pandas in the wild. The zoo noted that he had recently undergone his annual health exam and showed no signs of illness, making his passing a surprise to staff and guests.

Impact on the community

Zoo employees, volunteers, and visitors described Randall as a sweet and gentle presence, often seen lounging in a tree while munching on bamboo or biscuits. He quickly became a favorite among families who stopped by the Forests exhibit, offering a chance to connect with a species that is increasingly endangered.

Randall shared his enclosure with Maiya, a female red panda who remains at the zoo. Staff say Maiya will continue to receive the same care and enrichment that made the exhibit popular, and the zoo plans to honor Randall’s memory with a small tribute in the exhibit area.

Red pandas and conservation

Red pandas are listed as endangered due to habitat loss, climate change, poaching, and the illegal wildlife trade. The Indianapolis Zoo participates in conservation programs aimed at protecting the species in the wild, including breeding initiatives and public education efforts.

Zoo director Jane Doe emphasized the importance of community involvement in conservation, noting that “every visitor who learns about the challenges facing red pandas helps us build a stronger voice for protecting their natural habitats.” She encouraged guests to support the zoo’s ongoing conservation projects through donations, volunteer work, or simply spreading awareness.

Looking ahead

While the loss of Randall is felt deeply by the zoo family, the institution remains committed to its mission of wildlife preservation and education. The Forests exhibit will continue to welcome guests, offering a glimpse of the delicate balance of nature and the role each individual can play in safeguarding endangered species.

For those who wish to pay tribute to Randall, the zoo will host a brief remembrance ceremony next Saturday at 10 a.m. in the exhibit’s viewing area. Details will be posted on the zoo’s website and social media channels.
