Raw sewage floods parking lot at Palms at 8800 apartment complex in San Antonio

Residents of the Palms at 8800 apartment complex on San Antonio’s Northeast Side are confronting a public‑health crisis after raw sewage began flowing through the complex’s parking lot early last weekend. The foul‑smelling flood, which includes wastewater and toilet paper, has persisted for several days, prompting tenants to demand immediate repairs and a thorough cleanup.

Tenants describe the conditions

Tenant Alyssa Gustafson, who moved into the complex in July and is currently pregnant with her second child, said the problem first became apparent Saturday night. “It hits you right in the face when you walk outside. There’s no avoiding it,” she told reporters. “I wake up, take my dog out for a walk, and instead of fresh morning air I get toilet.”

Gustafson reported that she called the city’s water utility to file a complaint, only to be told the issue was a property matter, not a municipal one. She also submitted an emergency work order through the complex’s tenant portal, but as of Tuesday she had not received a response.

Health concerns for families

“This could make anybody sick,” Gustafson warned, noting that children regularly ride bikes and play in the affected area. “I see kids with slides on, not even closed‑toed shoes, walking through this. It could bring illness into their homes.”

A man visiting his children at the complex, who asked to remain anonymous, echoed those concerns, saying the sewage had flooded a large portion of the parking lot over the weekend and posed a contamination risk for school‑going children.

Management’s silence and city‑government response

When KSAT reporters approached the property’s management office on Tuesday, a staff member locked the door as the crew arrived. A maintenance worker on site indicated that a contractor was scheduled to address the problem, but no timeline was provided.

The Palms at 8800 has not responded to requests for comment. Under Texas law, landlords are required to make diligent efforts to repair conditions that materially affect tenants’ health or safety. Tenants say they are still waiting for the issue to be fully resolved and for the area to be properly sanitized.

What residents can do

Tenants are considering legal recourse if the problem is not remedied promptly, especially given the presence of young children and a pregnant resident. “We’d have to leave, or we’d have to find some legal recourse, because I have a child and another one on the way,” Gustafson said.

City officials have not yet issued a statement, but the situation underscores the importance of timely maintenance and clear communication between property managers and residents, especially when public‑health risks are involved.

Community impact

The incident highlights broader concerns about housing quality and tenant safety in San Antonio’s growing Northeast Side. As more families move into the area, ensuring that landlords meet their legal obligations remains a critical component of a healthy, thriving community.
