AI tools to help schools assess academic and soft‑skill progress

Legend.org, a New York‑based education technology firm, announced that it will begin offering artificial‑intelligence (AI) assessment tools to the 400 public and private schools that belong to the Mastery Transcript Consortium. The company purchased the nonprofit consortium in July and is now integrating AI‑driven feedback into the consortium’s non‑traditional report‑card system, which tracks both academic achievement and “soft” skills such as communication, collaboration and critical thinking.

How the AI works

Co‑founder Matt Sornson explained that teachers can upload any type of student work—digital files, PDFs or even photos of handwritten assignments—into the Legend platform. The AI then compares each piece against the standards set by the state, the school district or the individual teacher’s rubric. For written work, the system can evaluate structure, argument quality and use of evidence. For recorded presentations, it can assess tone of voice, eye contact, body language and posture. For visual art, the AI looks at composition, technical execution, material use, visual communication and originality. For music, it can judge rhythm, pitch and intonation.

Importantly, Sornson stressed that the AI does not assign final grades. “It does the first pass of assessing the rubric and what they’re trying to grade,” he said. “The teacher always chooses the final grade.” The technology is intended to act as a digital “red pen,” highlighting areas where students can improve and freeing teachers from the most time‑consuming aspects of grading.

Benefits for teachers and students

Consortium founder Scott Looney, head of the private Hawken School in Cleveland, Ohio, said the AI could dramatically reduce the hours teachers spend reading and grading assignments. By providing immediate, data‑driven feedback, the tools give students a clearer sense of where they stand on both academic and soft‑skill competencies. Looney added that faster feedback helps students adjust their work before submitting final versions, potentially improving learning outcomes.

Because the AI can evaluate large volumes of work across multiple courses, it also streamlines the creation of student portfolios. These portfolios, which showcase progress on dozens of skills, are a core component of the Mastery Transcript model and are intended to give colleges and employers a more nuanced view of a graduate’s abilities.

Transparency and safeguards

Researchers and educators have warned that AI grading systems can be overly lenient or produce results that differ from human teachers. To address these concerns, Legend.org plans to be transparent about how the AI is used and to give schools the ability to set their own standards. Amanda Hirsch, an assistant director at the Center for Innovative Teaching and Learning at Northern Illinois University, emphasized the need for clear communication with students about AI involvement and for ongoing monitoring to prevent bias.

Legend.org also noted that the AI will never make high‑stakes decisions on its own. Human oversight remains a cornerstone of the system, ensuring that teachers retain ultimate authority over grades and that any AI‑generated suggestions are reviewed for fairness and accuracy.

Future possibilities

Looney envisions a future where students can submit work directly to the platform for AI‑generated suggestions before turning it in to a teacher. He also suggested that colleges and employers might eventually upload their own skill standards, allowing the AI to evaluate high‑school work against the criteria that matter most to post‑secondary institutions and the workforce.

While some schools in the consortium have already begun testing the tools, others are still evaluating the purchase and have not yet committed to implementation. Looney expressed confidence that the technology will prove “highly accurate and save students and teachers time,” but he also acknowledged that the transition will require training and adjustments.

What this means for parents and communities

For families, the AI‑enhanced Mastery Transcript promises more detailed insight into a child’s development beyond traditional letter grades. Parents will be able to see concrete data on communication, collaboration and problem‑solving skills, helping them support their children’s growth at home.

Overall, the rollout represents a significant step toward modernizing assessment while preserving the essential role of teachers. By combining human judgment with AI efficiency, Legend.org aims to create a more personalized, transparent and time‑effective grading experience for schools across the nation.
