Raising Cane’s Opens First Standalone Restaurant in Tuscaloosa Amid Crowd and Small PETA Protest

The city of Tuscaloosa saw its first standalone Raising Cane’s restaurant open on Monday morning at 1241 McFarland Boulevard East. The fast‑food chicken chain, celebrating its 30th anniversary with a nationwide expansion, attracted a sizable gathering of residents, local leaders and a small group of animal‑rights protesters.

Local Leaders Attend Opening

Mayor Walt Maddox, State Senator Gerald Allen and several members of the Tuscaloosa City Council were on hand for the ribbon‑cutting ceremony hosted by the Chamber of Commerce. Maddox, a longtime friend of property owner Robert Buchalter, praised the rebuilding efforts after the 2011 EF‑4 tornado that devastated the area. “Robert and I are both Idlewood boys, we grew up in the same working‑class area of Tuscaloosa, and I like to think we both know what it means to work hard,” Maddox said.

Charitable Contribution and Customer Giveaway

As part of the celebration, Raising Cane’s contributed $2,000 to the Nick’s Kids Foundation, a local nonprofit serving children’s needs. The restaurant also held a “Lucky 20” drawing, awarding twenty customers a year of free chicken meals.

PETA Demonstration

A small contingent of PETA activists staged a graphic protest, suspending a woman upside down and simulating a throat‑slitting with fake blood to draw attention to poultry‑processing practices they label as animal cruelty. The demonstration drew mixed reactions from passing motorists and a bicyclist who suggested the group focus on other humanitarian concerns. A visible presence of Tuscaloosa Police Department officers kept the situation orderly.

Opening Hours and Interior Theme

The restaurant opened its doors at 10 a.m., with operating hours of 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. Monday through Thursday and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Inside, décor highlights Tuscaloosa landmarks alongside artwork chronicling founder Todd Graves’ journey in building the Raising Cane’s brand.

Community Impact

The new location joins an existing campus‑side Raising Cane’s and adds to the city’s dining options, potentially creating jobs and increasing foot traffic in the McFarland corridor. The event underscores the collaboration between local business development and municipal leadership as Tuscaloosa continues to recover and grow after past natural disasters.
