Raging Waters Is Gone. Cowabunga Bay Filled the Void

Cowabunga Bay sits on about 22 acres just off Redwood Road, and it replaced the old Raging Waters site — which many West Valley families still eulogize like a deceased relative. Whether the new version lives up to the original depends entirely on who you ask, but the park has quietly built a solid local following since reopening the site, and on a 95-degree July afternoon, nobody is standing in the parking lot arguing about legacy.

The park runs from late May through Labor Day weekend, and the sweet spot for going is a weekday in mid-June or early September. Weekend afternoons in July are genuinely crowded — not “fun kind of busy” crowded, but “45-minute wait for a single slide” crowded. If you have flexibility, a Tuesday morning in June will get you on the main slides within ten minutes, and the lazy river will feel almost meditative by comparison.

The slides are the main draw. Rattlesnake Run is a family raft ride that fits four — good for mixed-age groups where someone is too nervous for the steep stuff. The speed slides on the far end of the park are what the teenagers are actually there for; they’re legitimately fast and the drop is abrupt enough that first-timers usually make a face at the bottom that they’d prefer not to be photographed. There’s also a solid wave pool and a dedicated kids’ area that keeps the under-6 crowd busy without putting them in the path of anyone moving at speed.

Admission runs around $35-$40 per person at the gate for general adult entry, though purchasing online in advance usually knocks off five or six dollars. Kids under a certain height get a discount, and they offer season passes that pay off quickly if you’re the type who goes four or five times a summer. Parking is around $10 unless you get there early and snag street parking nearby, which is genuinely possible on weekdays.

Food inside the park is what you’d expect: overpriced burgers, funnel cake, and soft-serve that costs roughly twice what it should. The nachos are passable. If you’re feeding more than two people, it adds up fast — budget an extra $20-$30 for snacks and lunch if you’re staying all day. Outside food technically isn’t allowed in, but sealed water bottles and modest snacks in a small bag seem to pass through the entry check without incident, most days.

Lockers are available near the entrance and run a few dollars for the day. Bring a lock if you have one; the rental lockers work fine but the lines to get them sorted can be slow. Sun protection is not optional — the park is almost entirely exposed, and shade is scarce outside the covered seating areas near the food stands.

What Cowabunga Bay does well is deliver a functional, well-maintained water park that West Valley didn’t really have after the Raging Waters closure. It’s not trying to compete with the mega-parks in other states. It knows what it is: a regional summer option for Salt Lake County families who don’t want to drive to Las Vegas for a decent wave pool. On that modest and reasonable premise, it delivers.
