A family of raccoons caused a stir in Encino, California, when they were mistaken for intruders on a rooftop. Residents called 911 at about 10:30 p.m. after hearing what sounded like someone trying to break into the house through a skylight.
Police Response
Officers in a patrol car arrived at the residence with lights and sirens activated for the burglary-in-progress call. A law enforcement helicopter crew hovering over the neighborhood soon identified the suspects — a family of noisy rooftop raccoons.
Authorities told NBC4 Investigates this wasn’t the first time they’ve received a call about a possible break-in that turned out to be raccoons on a rooftop. The LAPD urged residents to err on the side of caution and call 911 if they see or hear what sounds like someone attempting to break into their home.
