The R&A has issued a reminder of guidelines for fans attending the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, emphasizing the importance of being “welcoming, inclusive” to create a “memorable environment” for the final major on the PGA Tour schedule.
Fan Behavior a Concern
The R&A’s warning comes after instances of unruly fan behavior at recent tournaments, including the 2023 Open Championship and the 2026 U.S. Open. Champion Wyndham Clark faced jeers from the crowd after some of his shots at the U.S. Open, and multiple patrons were escorted out of Shinnecock Hills for crossing the line with their behavior.
R&A CEO Mark Darbon emphasized the need for fans to respect the players, the course, and fellow spectators, stating that “every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience. The Open Commitment isn’t about changing what makes the Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions.”
