Queen of Martyrs Appoints New Principal Amid Safety Reforms

Queen of Martyrs Elementary School in Mount Greenwood has appointed Beth Guerrero as its new principal. Guerrero, who served as interim principal during a challenging period for the school, is now tasked with implementing new safety measures following a scandal involving a substitute teacher with a history of child molestation convictions.

Leadership and Safety

Guerrero, a former teacher at the school, stepped in as interim principal in January. Her leadership has been praised by both parents and staff for bringing stability and care to the school community, which serves over 170 students from pre-K through eighth grade. Rev. Benedykt Pazdan, pastor of St. Gianna Parish, which includes Queen of Martyrs, expressed confidence in Guerrero’s ability to lead the school forward.

The scandal erupted when Brett Smith, a substitute teacher, was found to have a history of criminal charges related to child molestation. Following his dismissal, Smith faced new charges of criminal sexual abuse. A lawsuit alleges that the Archdiocese of Chicago was aware of Smith’s background but failed to inform parents.

New Protocols and Community Support

Guerrero has introduced a 14-step hiring process and enhanced security measures, including the installation of security cameras, to ensure student safety. Her background in human resources has been instrumental in shaping these new protocols.

Parents and community members have expressed support for Guerrero’s appointment. Mary Larkin Cunningham, a parent and member of the school’s advisory board, highlighted Guerrero’s dedication and presence in the school community. Kelly Whirity, another parent, praised Guerrero’s engagement with students and her commitment to education.

As the school looks to the future, Guerrero is working on collaborations with nearby St. Xavier University to enhance student activities. Rev. Pazdan emphasized the school’s commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for all students.
