Qantas has unveiled its first custom Airbus A350-1000ULR, designed for nonstop flights from Sydney to London and New York. The airline has ordered 12 of these specially modified jets, which will feature a wellness zone, lighting systems to combat jet lag, and a reduced passenger capacity for more comfort.
Project Sunrise
Qantas’ Project Sunrise aims to reduce travel times and push the limits of commercial aviation. The airline has spent years operating some of the world’s longest routes and believes the appeal of these flights is already proven. The first modified aircraft has completed its maiden test flight, with deliveries scheduled to begin next year.
The custom jet is configured to carry 238 passengers, significantly fewer than the standard A350. The planes will feature suites with 80-inch flat beds, separate armchairs, and full-length wardrobes in first class. Business class will have 52 suites with sliding doors, while premium economy will have 40 seats and economy will accommodate 140 passengers.
Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson stated that the objective of solving the ‘tyranny of distance’ has been the airline’s mission since its founding. The airline believes that the new flights will usher in a new era of global connectivity, allowing travelers to bypass exhausting layovers and experience a more comfortable journey.
