The Purple People Bridge, a cherished landmark connecting Newport and Cincinnati, has reopened ahead of schedule. City officials announced that the bridge is back in service five days earlier than planned, following the completion of long-term structural repairs on the Cincinnati approach. Originally, the bridge was expected to remain closed until June 8.
Community Effort and Funding
Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli expressed pride in the city’s achievement, stating, “This is a proud day for Newport and for the entire region. We set out to move the Purple People Bridge from temporary fixes to a permanent solution, and thanks to the City’s leadership and the commitment of our partners, we’ve delivered that solution ahead of schedule.” The bridge had been relying on a temporary shoring tower for over two years due to long-standing damage, which necessitated a closure lasting nearly six months in 2024.
The successful repairs were made possible through the support of regional funding partners, including meetNKY, the Northern Kentucky Port Authority, BeNKY, Western & Southern, Procter & Gamble, and the Greater Cincinnati Foundation. Newport officials have prioritized replacing the temporary fix with a permanent solution since taking sole ownership of the bridge last year.
Future Enhancements
Looking ahead, more improvements are planned for the Purple People Bridge. House Bill 900 has allocated $2 million from the 2027-28 Budget Reserve Trust Fund for the installation of a new LED lighting system. This enhancement aims to further elevate the bridge’s status as a regional attraction.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at 9 a.m. to celebrate the reopening, marking a significant milestone for the community and ensuring that one of the region’s most beloved assets is once again accessible to the public.
